Biological control is an essential tool in agricultural pest management. There are three types of biological control: Conservation Biological Control, Augmentation Biological Control, and Classical Biological Control. These practices are important because they can maintain pest insect populations below the threshold of action, before using pesticides, these tactics can be used in greenhouses or open fields as long as conditions permit. It is important to note that biological control is not the same as natural control, the first requires human action and the second is a natural regulation without human intervention. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) has promoted biological control, a tactic that minimizes the use of pesticides and encourages the preservation of natural enemies.
The main advantages of biological control include the reduction of toxic residues, lower probability of generating resistance in pests, and the preservation of biodiversity. However, it faces challenges such as slow initial impact and the risk of affecting non-target species if not properly managed.
In conclusion, biological control is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative that can be key to the future of agriculture, provided it is implemented with adequate research and supervision.
